The Dutch Cancer Society describes itself as follows: The Dutch Cancer Society is the biggest private organisation for cancer control in the Netherlands. Its income consists exclusively of gifts from the population. In 1999 the budget was about 117 million Dutch guilders (equal to $59 million). The Society spends about 80% of its budget on cancer research and 5% on education and training of professionals in cancer research and treatment of cancer. Besides cancer research, public information and patient support are the main tasks of the organisation, accounting for 15% of the annual budget.
