After oral administration, it is rapidly absorbed and widely distributed into alll tissues. It readily crosses blood brain barrier and is not bound to plasma proteins. It is not metabolised.

Indication & Dosage

As asjunctive therapy in treatment of partial seizures with or without secondary generalisation in adults.
Dosage: Adults: 1st day 300mg daily, 2nd day 300mg twice daily, 3rd day 300mg thrice daily, increased gradually to 1.2 g in 3 divided doses. Max. 2.4g daily, usual dose 0.9-1.2g daily; max. period between doses should not exceed 12 hours.
Children: Not recommended.

Action

Anticonvulsant mechanism is not known. Food has no effect on the rate and extent of absorption; however, as the dose increases, the bioavailability decreases. t1/2: 5-7 hr. Excreted unchanged through the urine.

Adverse Effect & Precaution

Nausea, dyspepsia, constipation, vomiting, dizziness, ataxia, fatigue, somnolence, nystagmus, tremor, diplopia, headache and rhintis. Back pain, dysarthria, impotence, prurits, amnesia, diplopia, depression

Precaution: If drug is considered important for mother then breast feeding shouldbe discontined. Not recommended in elderly, children below 12 years & patients with renal impairment.
Pregnancy: Safety not established.
Breast Feeding: Use with caution.
Man: May be given in reduced dose.
