Oral

HYPERLIPIDAEMIAS: 600mg twice daily in the morning and evening 30 mins
before meals.

Action

Reduces serum triglycerides(TG) and increases HDL cholesterol. LDL
cholesterol is reduced to a greater extent thean by clofibrate. VLDL
synthesis is reduced while its catabolism is increased. Incidence of
coronary heart disease has been reduced. Gemfibrozil has no effect on
plasma fibrinogen or glucose tolerance.

Interaction



Oral anticoagulants: Effficacy of oral anticoagulants enhanced requiring
adjustment in their dosage.

Lovastatin: Rhabdomyolysis (mositis) has occured as early as 3 weeks
after combined therapy.

Adverse
Effect & Precaution



Nausea, diarhoea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, myositis, fatigue,
skin rash, cholelithiasis, weight gain, leucopenia, alopecia, blurred
vision.



Precaution: To monitor blood count,
liver function and lipid profile before starting the therapy and to
repeat these test periodically. Children, inadequate response after 3
months.

Pregnancy: Contraindicated.

Breast Feeding: Contraindicated.

Man: Use with caution.
