Glycopyrrolate
Indication
& Dosage
IM/IV
PREANESTHETIC MEDICATION: Adults:200-400mcg(4-5mcg/kg to a max of
400mcg) IM OR IV injection. Children: 4-8mcg/kg to a max of 200mcg IM or
IV injection.
INTRAOPEATIVE MEDICATION: Same dose as above by IV INJECTION FOR CONTORL
OF MUSCARINIC SIDE EFFECTS OF NEOSTIGMINE IN REVERSAL OF COMPETETIVE
NEUROMUSCULAR BLOCK: Adult: By IV injection 10-15mcg/kg with every
50mcg/kg neostigmine. Children: 10mcg/kg with every 50mcg/kg neostigmine.
Action
It is a synthetic muscarinic rceptor antagonist. It induces smooth muscle relazation; it reduces volume & free acidity of gastric secretions & controls pharyngeal. tracheal & bronchial secretions. It antagonizes muscarinic symptoms (bronchorrhea, bronchopasm, bradycardia, & intestinal hypermotility) induced by antichholinesterases. It does not cross the blood-brain barrier.
Interaction
Cycolpropane:
Increased ventricular arrhythmias.
Adverse
Effect & Precaution
G.I. upset,
difficulty in micturation, impaired alertness, skin reactions, atropine
like effect.
Precaution: Hypertension, cardiac diseases, renal or hepatic impairment,
hyperthyroidism, high ambient temperature, intestinal obstruction.
Pregnancy: Caution, use only if clearly indicated.
Breast Feeding: Contraindicated.
Man: May be given in reduced dose.
