Indication
& Dosage

Oral

ALL GRADES OF HYPERTENSION, PREGNANCY  HYPERTENSION, ANGINA PECTORIS
WITH CO-EXISTING HYPERTENSION:
50mg b.i.d. increasing at 14 day intervals
upto max of 600mg/day  in 2 divided doses. Administer with food.

TOP

Action

Combine selective alpha1-adrenergic receptor blockade with nonselective
beta-blockade. Orally the ratio is 1:3 while intravenously it is 1:7.
Pressor effects are attenuated (alpha 1 blockade). heart rate reduced and
reflex tachycardia abolished. Labetalol reduces blood pressure and heart
rate. Blood pressure refuction while standing is more than while lying
down.

Interactions

Beta-adrenergic
agonists: Can decrease the bronchodilator effects of these drugs
in patients with bronchospam. Halothane: SIgnificant myocardial
depression with I.V labetalol. Don’t use high concentration(3% or
above) of halothane.

Nitroglycerin: Labetalol blunts reflex tachycardia produced by
nitroglycerin without preventing its hypotensive effect.

Lab Test: False increase in urinary catecholaminelevels by non
specific trihydroxyindole reaction. Reversible increase in serum
transaminases. Rarely reversible increase in blood urea.

Precautions

Cardiac failure, diabetes, abrupt with drawal, hypethyroidism,
