Pharmacokinetics

 


Only very small amounts of topically applied mupirocin are absorbed into
the systemic circulation where it is rapidly metabolised to monic acid.

& Dosage


 


Topical Skin

PRIMARY AND SECONDARY BACTERIAL SKIN INFECTIONS; E.G. IMPETIGO,
FOLLICULITIS, FURUNCULOSIS AND ERYTHEYMA, INFECTED ECZEMA, WOUNDS, MINOR
BURNS: (2% oint) Small amount applied over affected area t.i.d. for upto
10 days cover with gauze dressing

Action

 


Active against aerobic Gram-postive pathogens especially Staph. aureus,
Staph. epidermidis, Strep. pyogenes and other beta-haemolytic
streptococci. Methicillin-resistant strains and most streptococci
including S. pneumoniae and S.pyogenes are also susceptible.
Gram-negative organisms susceptible include H. influenzae, Neisseriae,
Moraxella, Pasteurella multocida. Not active against Chlamydia.

 
Adverse
Effect & Precaution




Burning sensation, itching, stinging and dryness localized to area of
application. Rarely cutaneous senstitization.



Precaution: Not to be used in extensive burns.

Pregnancy: Contraindicated.

Breast Feeding: Use with caution. Temporarily discontinue nursing.

Man: may be used.
