Pharmacokinetics

Oxazepam is slowly absorbed from the gut, and the CNS
penetration is also slow. It’s plasma half life is about 10 hours. It
has no active metabolites-the duraton of action is relatively shorter.
The hepatic metabolism is not significant, hence prefered in elderly and
in those with hepatic disease.

Indication
& Dosage




Oxazepam is used to relieve the anxiety, tention, agitation, and
irritability in the elderly and in those with hepatic disease. Oral
dose:30-60 mgs in 2-3 divided doses.

Action





Absorbed more slowly than most benzodiazepines. Peak plasma levels: 2-4
hr. t1/2: 5-20 hr. Broken down in the liver to inactive
metabolites, which are excreted through both the urine and feces.
Reputed to cause less drowsiness than chlordiazepoxide.

Interaction

Oxazepam potentiates the CNS depression produced by
other drugs[alcohol, babiturates, MAO inhibitors.

Adverse
Effect & Precautions






Sedation, dizziness, vertigo,
headache, disorientation, blurred vision, drowsiness, hypersensitivity
reaction and dependence.

Precaution has to be taken in myasthenia gravis,
acute narrow angle gaucoma, and in pregnancy & lactation.

Pregnancy: Special precautions.

Breast Feeding: Special precautions.

Man: May be given in low dosage.
