It is completely absorbed after oral administration. It undergoes enterohepatic cycling and is extensively bound to plasma proteins.
Oral
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS, OSTEOARTHRITIS, ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS, ACUTE
GOUT, OTHER PAINFUL CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH MUSCULO-SKELETAL TISSUES:
10-30mg daily. Acute disorders including acute gout: 40mg daily as a
single or 2 divided doses for 7-14 days. Shorter duration of 4-6 days
for gout. DYSMENORRHOEA: Start with 40mg daily. Reduce as possible
IM
POSTOPERATIVE AND POSTTRAUMA PAIN, ACUTE MUSCULO-SKELETAL DISORDERS:
20mg give IM.
Action
Belongs to the oxicam group of NSAID’s. It has a prolonged
half-life and can be given in once a day dosage. Inhibits the enzyme
cyclo-oxygenase in the pathway of prostaglandin synthesis. Exerts
anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic action.
Concurrent administration of aspirin results in decreased plasma concentrations of piroxicam to about 80% of normal. Concomitant administration of piroxicam and ritonavir may result in increased plasma concentrations of piroxicam and carries an increased risk of toxicity; use together should be avoided.
Adverse Effect & Precautions
Nausea, heart burn, vomiting, epigastric distress, tinnitus, skin rash,
oedema.
Precaution: Severe impairment of hepatiac or renal function.
Hypertension, surgery haemorrhagic disorders. Prolonged use.
Pregnancy: Contraindicated.
Breast Feeding: Conraindicated.
Man: Use with caution.
