THROID DEFICIENCY STATES IN ALL AGES AND STATES INCLUDING PREGNANCY:
0.005-0.2mg/day
Thyroxine increases the basal metabolic rate(BMR) and the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The hormone is particularyly important for the development of the central nerovous system. Given in thyroid deficiancy states, thyroxine reveses most of the changes caused by lack of thyroid
Adverse
Effect & Precautions
Palpitation,
osteoporosis, angina, tremors, thyrotoxicosis, allergic reaction,
headahce, tachycardia, diarrhoea, restlessness, sweating, loss of
wt. & muscle weakness.
Precaution: Coronary heart disease, ECG changes of myocardial
infarction. In patients with adrenal insufficiency, first
corticosteroid therapy should be given followed by thyroxine
Pregnancy: May be used if clearly indicated.
Breast Feeding: Use with caution.
Man: Use with caution.
