Pharmacokinetics
After oral administration Cefixime is absorbed from G.I. tract and is
widely distributed in most tissues and fluids. High concentration of the
drug is attained in bile. Nearly 50% of the absorbed Cefixime is
excreted unchanged in urine in 24 hours.
Oral
OTITIS MEDIA, PHARYNGITIS, TONSILLITIS, ACUTE BRONCHITIS, ACUTE EXACERBATIONS OF CHRONIC BRONCHITIS, UTI: Adult: 200-400mg/day as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Children: 8mg/kg/day as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Children under 6 months: Not recommended. Treatment continued for 48 hours after disappearance of symptoms. Some dose reduction in renal impairment.
UNCOMPLICATED GONORRHEA: 400mg single dose.
Action
Bactericidal to many Gram-Postive and Gram-Negative pathogens.
Susceptible organisms include betalactamase-producing strains also. Not
active against Pseudomonas, Group D Streptococci, Listeria,
monocytogenes, many strains of Staphylococci, Bacteroides fragilis and
clostridia
Probenecid: Increases and prolongs the effect.
Oral anticoagulant: Effect of anticoagulants potentiated.
Adverse
Effect & Precaution
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, skin rash,
urticaria, durg fever, pruritus, dizziness, headache
Penicillin sensitive patients, severe renal impairment. Safety in
children aged less than 6 months has not been established.
Pregnancy: Use with caution
Breast Feeding: Safety not established.
Man: Use with caution.
