Indication
& Dosage

Disopyramide
is used to treat ventricular tachyarrythmias and some types of
supraventricular arrythmias.

For treatment
of arrhythmias: For short-acting oral dosage forms (capsules): Adults :
300 milligrams (mg) initially. Then 100 to 150 mg taken every six to
eight hours. Children: The dose is usually 6 to 30 mg per kilogram (kg)
of body weight per day. This dose is evenly divided and taken every six
hours. For long-acting oral dosage forms (extended-release capsules or
tablets): Adults: 200 or 300 mg every twelve hours. For injection dosage
form: Adults: initially dose is based on body weight . It is usually 2
mg per kg of body weight injected in three divided doses, or, 2 mg per
kg of body weight infused over fifteen minutes. Dose following first few
doses: It is usually 0.4 mg per kg of body weight per hour given for up
to twenty-four hours.

Interactions

Anti-arrhythmics : Avoid other antiarryhythmics except
in life threatening conditions. B-Blockers & Verapamil : Adverser
negative chronotopic and inotropic effects potentiated.

Eydantoin : Efficacy of disopyramide enhanced leading to arrhythmias and
increased QT intervals.

Quinidine : Increased disopyramide serum levels leading to toxicity and
devreased quinidine levels resulting in reduced efficacy.

Rifampicin : Decreases serum levels of disopyramide.

Digoxin : Potentiates inhibitory effect on conduction system produced by
digitalis.

Hydatoin : Efficacy of disopyramide reduced upto several days after
withdrawal of hydantoin. Anticholinergic effects may be enhanced.

Adverse
Effect & Precaution

Dry mouth constipation, blurred vision, urinary urgency
and occasional urinary retention, nausea, vomitting diarrhoea, abdominal
pain hypoglycaemia, jaundice, coronary heart failure, hypotension.

Special Precaution : Renal and hypadic impairment,
glaucoma, urinary retention, digitalis intoxication, digitalise first in
atrial flutter or fibrillation or blocked supraventricular tachycardia,
prostate hypertrophy and children.

Pregnancy : Safety not established.

Brest Feeding : Use with caution.
