Oxybutynin – Memory Impairment

    Identification of Medications That Cause Cognitive Impairment in Older People; The Case of Oxybutynin Chloride

    Introduction – It is important to ask whether the medications commonly used in older people have any adverse effects on memory or other cognitive functions that may have gone unrecognized in the drug approval and labeling process. 

       


    Results & Conclusions – After taking oxybutynin hydrochloride, the volunteers showed decreases in 7 of 15 cognitive measures, which were most apparent on tests of selective reminding and reaction time. Diphenhydramine hydrochloride [the control] was associated with reductions in 5 of the 15 measures.

      


    Oxybutynin hydrochloride appears to present a significant risk of reduced cognitive performance in healthy older adults.

      


    Although anticognitive activity and its effect on the CNS are well documented, the authors of the study point out that, its effects on cognitive function are not even listed in the drug label.

      


    The importance of these findings is that the patients under therapy with these agents are often elderly and may have
    other pre-existing cognitive deficits, which are further aggravated or
    exacerbated
