NE Lane, JW Oehlert, DA Bloch et al (Univ of California, San Francisco; Stanford Univ, Calif) : The Relationship of Running to Osteoarthritis of the Knee and Hip and Bone Mineral Density of the Lumbar Spine: A 9 Year Longitudinal Study.
J Rheumatol 25:334-341,1998.
Running has become a very popular form of exercise among middle aged and older adults. There has been some apprehension that running might lead to accelerated development of osteoarthritis in weight-bearing joints. Clinical follow up has given a reassuring conclusion that there is no difference in osteoarthritis of the hip and knee between runners and non-runners. Also there is some increased bone mineral density in higher lumbar spine in runners but this is not significant.
