    Hemodialysis
    fails to remove the dietary load of phosphorus, even
    with high-efficiency, high-flux membranes.

       

    A
    large percentage of hemodialysis patients who have
    been receiving dialysis for at least 1 year have a
    serum phosphorus level above 6.5 mg/dL, which places
    them at increased risk of death.

       

    Adequate
    dialysis, judicious use of phosphorus binders, and
    restriction of phosphorus in the diet may accomplish
    this goal.
