Folic Acid and Methotrexate

    Folic Acid Supplementation

    Methotrexate Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis:
    Implications for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention
    .

Low dose methotrexate has become a standard
    treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.
Drawback is the development of folate
deficiency and rise of plasma homocysteine levels
which may predispose to heart disease.
Administration of folic acid with long term
    low dose methotrexate
does not affect the efficacy of methotrexate
therapy, but prevents the adverse reactions such as
interference with folate metabolism and high plasma
    homocysteine levels.

Early rheumatoid arthritis is sometimes difficult to
    detect.  MRI
can show up soft tissue inflammatory changes of
    early rheumatoid arthritis.
Such changes in the MRI appear long before
changes of rheumatoid arthritis become visible by
    routine x-ray.
Early diagnosis may be useful in the
    treatment of aggressive rheumatoid arthritis.
