Endocarditis Due to Staphylococcus aureus: 59
    Prospectively Identified Cases with Follow-up.

    Clin
    Infect Dis 28: 106-114, 1999

    According
to the Duke criteria for diagnosing infective
endocarditis (IE) the vegetations need to be
detected by using ECHO cardiography – either
    transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).
The origin of the S.aureus bacteremia causing
the vegetation is usually some intravascular
    device.

    Endocarditis
due to S.aureus is often a fatal disease and is
detected by TTE in 33.9% cases and TEE in 81.4% of
cases i.e. TEE is more sensitive and detects
borderline cases more often than TTE.
