Acetaminophen and Other Risk Factors for Excessive Warfarin Anticoagulation
JAMA 279: 657-662, 1998
Warfarin anticoagulation is associated with hemorrhage when the intensity of anticoagulation is high i.e. international normalized ratio levels greater than 4.0.
This study is of 96 participants having an INR greater than 6.0 and 196 control participants. There was a significant dose response relationship between acetaminophen use and having a INR greater than 6.0. The mechanism responsible for acetaminophen’s effect is likely displacement of warfarin from serum proteins a common effect of analgesics.
