Antegrade balloon dilatation of nasolacrimal duct obstruction in adults.
Br J Ophthalmol Feb.2001, 85: 200-204
Antegrade balloon dilatation (using the lacricath balloon catheter set) was performed on 30 patients, who had complete nasolacrimal duct obstruction and epiphora. Local anesthesia was used in 26 patients. Silicone intubation was done simultaneously.
90% of cases had a successful result when examined postoperatively after 3 months.
70% of all cases were positive on simple irrigation after 6 months. One year post-operatively 73% of all cases showed subjective success.
The authors state that long term observation may be required to prove the sustained effect of this procedure.
