Needle Sterility During Strabismus Surgery.
J AAPOS 2:151-152, 1998
Postoperative endophthalmitis rarely occurs following strabismus surgery. The host conjunctiva may be a major source of infection. Though direct instillation of 5% povidone-iodine just prior to surgery is often practised, there is no method which completely sterilizes the conjunctiva in all patients. Needle sterility becomes a key issue, if scleral perforation is involved in the mechanism of infection. Sterility of needles used during strabismus surgery was assessed.
61 patients underwent strabismus surgery. 106 out of the 110 needles used in surgery were recovered and recultured. Cultures were found positive in 16 out of 106 eyes (15.1%) and in 15 of 61 patients (24.6%). There were no postoperative infections. Organisms cultured resembled the indigenous bacterial flora.
