Ankle Fractures in Diabetics: Complications of Surgical Management
J Bone Joint Surg Br 80-B: 689-692, 1998.
This is a case controlled study comparing complication rates for ankle fractures in diabetics with a matched group of nondiabetic patients. The incidence of complications and difference in outcomes were compared in 26 diabetic patients and 26 nondiabetic patients.
Significantly more diabetic patients had major complications. Whereas, insulin dependence did not contribute to the complication rate. 4 had wound problems and 2 died.
The authors suggest that diabetic should be treated by the nonoperative treatment.
