Blood Loss During Primary Total Hip Arthroplalsty : Use of Preoperative Measurements to Predict the Need for Transfusion
Ann R Coll Surg Eng 79: 438-440, 1997
Blood loss during total hip arthroplasty depends on various factors, such as anesthetic technique, operative approach, procedure duration, cement use, and previous exposure to aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Blood loss in 53 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty were examined. In all patients calculated blood loss exceeded actual blood loss. Preoperative packed cell volume [PCV] was the most significant predictor of transfusion needs and postoperative PCV.
Blood loss during total hip arthroplasty varies in different patients with the same anesthetist-surgeon team; preoperative PCV is a good predictor of transfusion needs.
