Cautery-Assisted Palatal Stiffening Operation for the Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome

    Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg 123: 55-60, 2000

Background : Uniformly effective and acceptable treatment for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) with low morbidity is yet to evolve. Use of laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) has given 50% patients relief but not consistently.

This inexpensive treatment of palatal stiffening by cautery was carried out in 25 patients. 48% had success if the same criteria for UPPP were applied. Only morbidity was postoperative pain.

According to R. A. Otto, this 10-minute clinic procedure offering 50% success rate, data supported by the authors was worth considering.
