Sonographic Appearances of Preauricular Sinus
Clin Radiol 55: 528-532, 2000
This is a common congenital abnormality prospective study in 13 patients was carried out by ultrasonography (US) with 5- to 10-MHz high-resolution transducer.
All 15 sinuses in 13 patients were seen on US. The tracts had width of 2 mm and a branching pattern in 27%. A cystic component was in 60% and terminal ramification in 40%. US showed gas in 60% cases.
US reliably depicted the relationship between sinus, superficial temporal artery, anterior crus of the helix, and the tragus. At surgery the branching pattern could not be confirmed.
According to R. A. Otto, US may be a useful guide and option to evaluate the recurrent or problematic sinus tract.
