    Effects of
    Middle Ear
    Effusion on the
    Vestibular System
    in Children

    Otolaryngol Head
    Neck Surg 119:
    695-699, 1998.

    This
    study was
    conducted in 136
    large group of
    children with long
    term MEF.
    The balance
    related symptoms
    are evaluated by
    questionnaires,
    though in clinical
    practice, very
    often this is not
    believed.
    The
    questions involved
    were child’s
    state of balance,
    clumsiness or
    tendency to fall.
    In 58%,
    pathological
    findings were
    detected and 4% of
    controls.

    The symptoms were
    resolved after
    evacuation of the
    effusion and
    ventilation of the
    ear by insertion
    of ventilation
    tubes.

    This article
    should evoke the
    clinicians to look
    for balance
    related symptoms
    in MEF at the time
    of management.
