Low Prevalence of Hearing Aid Use Among Older Adults with Hearing Loss: The Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study.

    J Am Geriatr Soc.46:1075-1078, 1998.

The prevalence of hearing-aid use is very low inspite of availability of new excellent devices. A total of 1629 adults with hearing loss participated in the Hearing Loss Study.

Among participants with any level of hearing loss, the prevalence of having used a hearing aid was 20.7%. Of participants who owned a hearing aid, 29.3% no longer used it.

These statistics are sad. Hearing aids have advanced considerably and technology is so good that most patients could benefit from amplification.
