Clinical Predictors and Outcomes for Patients Requiring Tracheostomy in the Intensive Care Unit.
Crit Care Med 27: 1714-1720, 1999
The need for prolonged mechanical ventilation is the most common indication in ICU.
Five hundred twenty-one patients in ICU more than 12 hrs were studied prospectively. 51 patients (9.8%) had tracheostomy tube. The mortality rate in the tracheostomy group was 13.79% against 26.4% in non-tracheotomy group.
Early intervention is indicated in those patients whose clinical course us likely to be prolonged – risk factor -according to G.R. Holt.
