Sinus Surgery: Does Mitomycin C Reduce Stenosis ?
Laryngoscope 108: 883-886, 1998.
In the animal study, light microscopy demonstrates that treated mucosal wounds are able to re-epithelize. Scanning electron microscopy shows the return or normal cilia on the mucosa within 2 weeks of surgery.
It is interesting to note that ciliary function is preserved and stenosis is infrequent. This could also help prevent synechiae of the anterior end of the middle turbinate. The greatest potential benefit would be in preventing stenosis of nasolacrimal duct. This pilot study with limited number is interesting and may prove useful clinically – R.A. Otto.
