    Whole body Potassium and bone Mineral Density up
    to 30 Years after urinary Diversion

    Background – Urinary diversion can lead to
    metabolic complications, such as electrolyte
    abnormalitites.



    Method – 27 patients were studied for bone
    mineral density, whole body potassium, electrolyte
    and creatnine levels.



    Findings : – Bone Mineral density was normal
    in all 25 patients for whom exact measurement was
    possible. 



    8 patients had reduced whole body potassium
    contents. In 4 of these patients, the base excess
    was less than- 2.5. Of the remaining 4 , 2 had no
    regular base balance testing, and 2 were obese.
    Electrolytes were within normal ranges in all
    patients and no patient had hyperchloremic metabolic
    acidosis.



    Conclusion – With early correction of the base
    excess, none of these patients had a reduction in
    bone mineral density of hyperchloremic acidosis. Low
    base excess appears to be reduced whole body
    potassium.
