  • Effect of maternal hydration on oligohydramnios: A comparison of three volume expansion methods:

    S Doi, H Osada, K Seki et al (Chiba Univ, Japan) Obstet Gynecol 92:525-529,1998.



    The effect of maternal hydration with IV isotonic fluid, IV hypotonic fluid and oral water on the amniotic fluid index in women with oligohydramnios were reported.



    Eighty-four patients with low AFI gestational age older than 35 weeks and without maternal complications were assigned randomly to 1 of the 3 treatment groups or a control group. The mean increase in AFI after hydration was significantly greater in the IV hypotonic and oral water groups compared with control group. Hydration with IV hypotonic or oral water increases amniotic fluid index in women with oligohydramnios. Maternal osomotic change had a greater direct effect on increasing amniotic fluid volume with short-term acute hydration than maternal volume expansion.



    The approach offers the possibility of avoiding labour induction solely on grounds of a reduced AFI at or past term through use of oral water administration.
