Vascular Anatomy of Monochorionic Placenta in Relation to Discordant Growth and Amniotic Fluid Volume. Bajoria R (Hammersmith Trust Hosp, London) Hum Reprod 13:2933-2940, 1998.
A paucity of superficial anastomoses, accompanied by presence of solitary or multiple AV arteriovenous anastomoses, is probably associated with severe twin to twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) and a fetal growth discordance of more than 20%. However, additional superficial AA or VV channels occur in mild TTTS, along with single deep AV anastomoses.
Editorial comments: Severe TTTS was associated often with a single deep A to V connection conducting blood to the recipient twin.
