    The association of IVH and ventriculomegaly (VM)
    with WMD was evaluated and WMD characteristics of
    location, size, and laterality were described.

        


    1605 infants each weighing 500 to 1500g, born
    between January 1991 and December 1995 were studied
    8 wk5 postnatal.

       


    IVH and VM are strong predictors of WMD in preterm
    infants, particularly when lesions are identified
    during the first postnatal month.

       


    White matter abnormalities are better predictors of
    poor long term neurologic outcome than is IVH. The
    relationship to WMD is stronger when
    ventriculomegaly accompanies IVH. The persistent
    presence of ventriculomegaly in white matter lesions
    without IVH points to the possibility of a
    developmental abnormality of the brain underlying
    the ultimate changes. IVH sets the stage for white
    matter infarction, necrosis, and cyst formation
    across adjacent ependymal tissue more often than
    earlier observations suggest.
