Premenstrual Syndrome

  • Randomized Controlled Trial of the Management of Premenstrual Syndrome and Premenstrual Mastalgia, Using Luteal Phase-Only Danazol

O’Brien PMs, Abukhalil IEH [Keele Univ Stroke-on-Trent, England, Sandwell District, Hosp, Lyndon, UK

    Am J Obstet Gynecol 180:18-23, 1999

One hundred women referred to PMS clinic at 1 center were enrolled in the study. The women were assigned to danazol, 200 mg given only in the luteal phase for 3 cycles, or to placebo.

Conclusion – The authors conclude that Danazol given in the luteal phase only is apparently not effective of the treatment of general PMS symptoms, although it seems to be very effective for relieving premenstrual mastalgia. Adverse effects were minimal.

Editorial comments by D.R. Mishell, Jr., MD –

The other symptoms associated with PMS e.g. irritability depression, anxiety and bloating -were not relieved with this dose of danazol, which did not inhibit ovulation. Clinicians may wish to utilize this therapy for women who have symptomatic premenstrual
    mastalgia.
